Girl in the park

Posted by Kin Chan Sunday, January 2, 2011 Labels: , , , 3 comments

Here is another character featured in the animation. When the baby arrives on the earth surface we initially decided to have two teenage boys appear but, after some consideration by our team, we agreed it would be more effective to feature a young girl.

Concept:

I was going for the cutesy girly look. The teddy bear prop will be dropped after the girl is frightened.

Coloured outfits:

I found the blue and orange colours to be the most effective, but this is subject to change. Opinions on colour scheme?

Renders with bear:

I rigged the arms so the girl can be positioned to hold the bear. The top image features the bear with no fur texture, with a solid block texture similar to the girl herself. The bottom image includes the fur texture. I think the fur texture is visually pleasing but may not blend well with the simplistic aesthetic of the animation. It is also a bastard to render.

@all - All suggestions+opinions are welcome!

@team - I'm going to start setting up the scenes starting with the ones featuring the police cars. Please have any necessary props ready on dropbox.

Two extra police characters to add a bit of variation to the police scene. We wanted a slimmer police officer to contrast the existing fat one. Here is a concept for one of them:

Orthographic wireframes for the model:

Textured renders for both characters:

Both characters are based on the same model but with different heads. I also utilized some bits from the fat police officer I had previously made such as the hat, badge, tie and gun.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome!

Car concepts

I created a single design for cars that will appear as props throughout the animation. The car has simple design and geometry to allow easy manipulation. Therefore, we will be able to create multiple vehicles with varying characteristics, whilst maintaining the core visual identity of the animation.

The main influence for this design was the Suzuki Alto van circa 1989:

There are also influences from cars such as the Mini Cooper and Robin Reliant.

Final baby concept

A few adjustments were made to the design of the baby in order to project a more robotic aesthetic. Preliminary concepts for the baby, included a chainsaw that was attached to the body after it was conceived. In this new design the weapon is implemented within its design, creating a more streamlined character.

Changes to the storyboard involve the baby becoming damaged as a result of gunfire. The fourth concept is an idea of what it would look like.

The '6' tattoo on the skull is also replaced with hair of similar shape. This is subject to change in accordance to how it looks after it's transition to 3D.

Town Street Concept

Town Street concept where the baby would begin his reign of terror.

We are aiming to achieve a bright and colourful suburban town to fit with our art direction and comedic value of the chainsaw wielding baby, as well as providing a contrast to the dark laboratory underground.

Elevator Concepts

Concepts for the elevator, which is the baby's means of escape to the surface. Initially, we thought of a old rustic sort of elevator for further atmosphere under the depths of Earth. Yet in light of the overall aesthetic, perhaps the simpler round elevator would work better particularly when rising to the surface in a comedic manner.

Laboratory Concept #02

Another concept piece developing the laboratory scene further. Again, I'm trying to capture the iconic shot of the baby in a growth tube/pod.

Experimenting with some varying designs of the growth pod. The more rounder shapes tend to take the setting a bit too sci-fi so I stuck with the more traditional cylinder shape.

Character concepts for the chainsaw wielding baby. The metallic codpiece is a device which would be attached to an artificial umbilical cord when he is in the underground lab. The ".06" and "6" marks would be his project number i.e. Project .06. I personally prefer the one on the right if we are to follow the 'Edward Scissorhands' feel to the trailer. Also, the greyish complexion gives it an unnatural and gloomy aesthetic.

Laboratory Concept #01

Our story has changed slightly after our meeting with Matthew Spradlin. A detailed post on this is soon to come with some storyboards, but essentially the 'Baby' is from an underground laboratory from the centre of Earth.

Initial concept for the laboratory scene, focusing on capturing the iconic image of the baby in a growth tube/pod.
