Baby's First Steps

Posted by Leo Tsang Friday, January 14, 2011 Labels: , , 1 comments

Watch Chainsaw baby take his first steps!

After looking at several babies walking on youtube, I tried to capture the baby's walk cycle by making him a little off balance and slowing his movements. It's not perfect - but its hopefully convincing enough for the few shots that the baby is walking in. Further eye movements and blinks will help the walk cycle overall.

Baby Shader - Mental ray material

This shader was made using a sub surface scattering network, to allow light to pass through thinner parts of the model more easily, this giving a more realistic skin tone.

This shader still needs tweaking and Leo's texture added into the network, but these 2 at the moment are different. the side view shows a more plastic looking skin, where as the perspective shot shows less specualrity and more realistic. Which one works better for this 'robotic' model?

It still needs tweaking, but it's getting the look we're after I think

Baby Initial Texture

Initial attempts at texturing the baby focusing on the texture maps. Let me know what you think.

Head UV

Created an initial set of face blendshapes to convey the facial expressions of the baby.

Made a quick test just experimenting with the facial blendshapes, so no subtle eye movements or blinks in this one.

Chainsaw Baby #4

The baby is fully rigged and skinned, complete with controls. He actually has three forms with a a normal form, a single chainsaw form, to a finale of a double chainsaw form.

Normal form

Single Chainsaw

Double Chainsaw

Chainsaw Model

The chainsaw animation is made similarly to the process of tank traps by using a nurbs circle as a path for the teeth to follow. Initially, I tried using a wire deformer which did not want to work for some reason, but eventually found the solution with the use of a mel script. Here I made made a quick experiment speeding up and slowing down the chainsaw animation. When it comes to animating the chainsaw fully, I'm hoping we can add some vibration to the chainsaw and perhaps motion blur when compositing.

I've also added the mouth interior to the baby, with some teeth and tongue. UVs are also laid out ready for texturing.

Scene List

Document structuring our scene/shots needed to be rendered, which corresponding file to use as well as which camera to use with the correct frame span. Posted for online reference.

As always, each member should be keeping local backups of the scene files in case of any unforeseen mishaps.

Online Meeting

Myself, Kin and Leo had a meeting this afternoon via Windows Live Messenger, and I felt it was surprisingly productive, all things considered.

We delegated roles amongst each other, and gave ourselves a time frame to work within. A few glitches in a project such as this are normal, and I think we've done pretty well to cope so far. If we all pitch in and do what was asked of each other today, I don't see
any reason why we won't be satisfied with our cartoon when all is done and dusted.

Just to let folks know who haven't seen me posting on here much, I have been working, texturing my models. As this is not my strongest point yet had to be done none the less, It has taken me longer than expected. Anyway, without letting too many cats out of the bag so to speak, here is a render of one textured model, just to let all know that I'm still alive kicking - The Sandbox

Girl in the park

Here is another character featured in the animation. When the baby arrives on the earth surface we initially decided to have two teenage boys appear but, after some consideration by our team, we agreed it would be more effective to feature a young girl.

Concept:

I was going for the cutesy girly look. The teddy bear prop will be dropped after the girl is frightened.

Coloured outfits:

I found the blue and orange colours to be the most effective, but this is subject to change. Opinions on colour scheme?

Renders with bear:

I rigged the arms so the girl can be positioned to hold the bear. The top image features the bear with no fur texture, with a solid block texture similar to the girl herself. The bottom image includes the fur texture. I think the fur texture is visually pleasing but may not blend well with the simplistic aesthetic of the animation. It is also a bastard to render.

@all - All suggestions+opinions are welcome!

@team - I'm going to start setting up the scenes starting with the ones featuring the police cars. Please have any necessary props ready on dropbox.

Two extra police characters to add a bit of variation to the police scene. We wanted a slimmer police officer to contrast the existing fat one. Here is a concept for one of them:

Orthographic wireframes for the model:

Textured renders for both characters:

Both characters are based on the same model but with different heads. I also utilized some bits from the fat police officer I had previously made such as the hat, badge, tie and gun.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome!

Chainsaw Baby #3

Made some changes to the head after some feedback - mainly tweaked the cheeks, jaw and eyes. I've also laid out the UVs and should have the rig in place soon enough.

Chainsaw Baby #2

Finished modelling our main character baby. The head has proven tricky as I've had some difficulty in ironing out some of the creases, though I think I've got it to an acceptable state. I believe the number '6' tattoo and eyebrows can also be done with textures. Once I've laid out the UVs, I'll move on to add the chainsaw model to the baby.

Front, Side and Back.

Oh, teeth or no teeth? Or perhaps just one...

Feedback is most welcome.
